This morning we make our way to Tullamarine for our flight to Brisbane. On arrival we are met by our coach and crew and make our way into town travelling beside the Brisbane river. We have free time to explore before we visit the Mt Coot-Tha Lookout and the Botanical Gardens. Then we travel to the Wheel of Brisbane for an exciting ride and different view of Brisbane then its off to the Mantra Midtown Motel for our overnight stay.
Day 2 - Monday 16th Hervey Bay
A leisurely start today as we enjoy a informative Brisbane River City Cruise. Departing we travel South past the Glass House Mountains originally named by Captain Cook in 1770. Continue on to the Sunshine Plantation where we visit the Ginger Factory. The Ginger Factory has been going for over 75 years, from a small farming community and ginger growers cooperative, to one of the worlds largest suppliers of ginger. We make our way to Hervey Bay where we relax for the next TWO NIGHTS at the Hervey Bay Beach Motel.
Day 3 - Tuesday 17th Fraser Island
An exciting day today as we enjoy a full day to discover Fraser Island unique and precious natural environments that has attained its World Heritage Listing. After a short ferry crossing its all aboard for our 4WD Tour Coach. We explore Fraser Island the Great Sandy National Park, marvel at the Tall Forest at Pine Valley, then we travel through open woodlands and see the clear water in Yidney Rainforest. See the Cathedral Coloured Sand Cliffs and the Maheno Shipwreck, before we visit the beautiful Eli Creek the largest of the freshwater streams flowing into the ocean. We enjoy our picnic lunch amongst the palms and bird-life on Fraser Island. Discover the Valley of Giants, the unique Lakes and Coloured Sands truly a unique day on Fraser Island.
Day 4 - Wednesday 18th Rockhampton
Today we travel further north to Bundaberg situated on the Burnett River, we visit the Bundaberg Rum Distillery for an interesting tour and complimentary drink. We also enjoy a visit through Bert Hinklers Cottage and Aviation Museum. Continue on to Gladstone, the site of a vast Alumina Plant, the worlds longest, then over the Tropic of Capricorn to Rockhampton known as the beef capital of Australia. Visit the beautiful Botanical Gardens, included in the gardens is a small Zoo with a wide range of Australian animals, and more recently an ornate Japanese Garden that compliments the beautiful surrounds. Time to settle into our accommodation in the heart of the city at the Cattle City Motor Inn.
Day 5 - Thursday 19th Airlie Beach
Leaving Rockhampton we continue north along the Bruce Highway through Sarina to Mackay, an attractive and progressive tropical city. Time to browse through the Shopping Mall and enjoy lunch at one of the many food bars. See the man-made harbour and the bulk sugar loading terminal, the worlds largest. Then we make our way through Proserpine to the lovely Airlie Beach Whitsundays latest escape at the lovely Coralsea Resort for the next two nights.
Day 6 - Friday 20th Whitsunday Cruise
We spend a full day cruising through the Whitsunday Island National Park including stops at Daydream Island and Hamilton Island.
Day 7 - Saturday 21st Emerald
We farewell Airlie Beach as we travel through the picturesque sugar cane area of Proserpine and Mackay areas. Then we head inland along the Peak Downs Highway to Clermont the first inland settlement in the tropics. This afternoon we travel south through the centre of the fertile region to Emerald the hub of the central Queensland highlands. We discover the Anakie Sapphire Fields and visit the Big Sapphire before we enjoy our OVERNIGHT stay at the WESTERN GATEWAY MOTEL EMERALD.
Day 8 - Sunday 22nd July St George
From the attractive town of Emerald we follow the Gregory Highway south through the cattle country to Springsure and Rolleston then along the Carnarvon Development Road to Roma a town that supplies natural gas to Brisbane. We continue along the Carnarvon Highway following the Balonne River with its large irrigation area around St George which is in the centre of a rich grape, peanut and cotton growing district. OVERNIGHT: MERINO MOTOR INN St GEORGE.
Day 9 - Monday 23rd Dubbo
Another interesting day as we make our way to Hebel then over the QLD / NSW border and along the Castlereagh Highway to Lightning Ridge a small opal mining town famous for its valuable Black Opal that attracts gem enthusiasts world-wide. We enjoy a short introductory tour and visit the famous Bottle House Museum. We continue on to Walgett situated near the junction of the Namoi and Barwon Rivers, where we enjoy our lunch break. After lunch we continue on through Coonamble and Gilgandra as we make our way to Dubbo for our last night together. OVERNIGHT: Blue Lagoon Motor Inn.
Day 10 - Tuesday 24th Dubbo - Home
The last day of our holiday we travel through Parkes and Forbes, to West Wyalong. Continue on through Narrandera and Finley, crossing the Voctorian border at Tocumwal and home. The conclusion to a most relaxing and scenic Islands holiday.
