Escape for a couple of days and explore Melbourne and surrounds
We head off this morning to Mount Macedon to visit the glorious Forest Glades Gardens. Forest Glade is a historic private garden that is acknowledged as one of the most beautiful in Australia. It embraces a mixture of landscaping styles taking inspiration from English, Italian and woodland traditions. There are four distinct themes: The large English section with its huge exotic trees, the delightful Japanese section complete with bonsai house, the beautiful woodland area displaying masses of shade-loving plants, the cool fern gully. We enjoy lunch (at own expense) at the Mount Macedon Hotel. After lunch we make our way to the Melbourne Star Big Wheel. Flights on the Melbourne Star are a spectacular way to get your bearings, with uninterrupted 360 degree views of the unique attractions and the Bay before you. Victorias nearby regions, from the Dandenongs to the You Yangs, to the Mornington Peninsula and nearby Port Phillip Bay, invite curiosity and exploration, an outstanding outlook across all points of the compass. Our journey continues to Healesville where we stay overnight at Sanctuary House.
An exciting day as we make our way to the Puffing Billy. Puffing Billy is Australias favourite steam train and is one of the finest preserved steam railways in the world. This century old steam train is still running on its original 24 kilometre mountain track from Belgrave to Gembrook, through the beautiful forests and fern gullies of the Dandenong Ranges. Our adventure continues as we travel to Arthurs Seat to take a ride on the Arthurs Seat Eagle. Board the state of the art gondola and fly over the state forest to the highest point of the beautiful Mornington Peninsula. You will be torn between looking at the breathtaking view across the bay to the city and spotting wildlife as you soar high above the trees. Either way you have a birds eye view! Its here we enjoy lunch (at own expense) before travelling to Sorrento to catch the Ferry to Queenscliff. We stay the overnight at the Grand Vue Hotel, Queenscliff.
A leisurely start as we take a little time for some retail therapy with a shop in Queenscliff, before boarding a steam train for a ride to Drysdale. Then its off to Geelong for lunch (at own expense) and shopping time in Geelong. The city itself boasts a large commercial centre which extends down to the foreshore, offering visitors the chance to explore popular beach front attractions such as Eastern Beach with its swimming enclosure, the Steampacket Gardens, the dining options available on Cunningham Pier, and several coastal walks, dotted with collections of bollards depicting historic characters. Elegant architecture, colourful gardens and parks, and the backdrop of Corio Bay are all symbolic of what locals refer to as the city by the bay. As we wind down from our tour its time to bid farewell to Geelong and head home, after a Glorious Getaway.
