Featuring Marree and Wilpena Pound Flinders Ranges
A relaxing start this morning as we make our way to Berri. Then we travel past Lake Bonnie and follow the Murray River to Morgan. Then on to the historic mining town of Burra for our lunch break. This afternoon we enjoy a guided tour of Burra and learn about the Dugout Houses, that were made in the creek banks, and the Paxton Square Cottages before we continue on to Peterborough, a town that has 3 different rail gauges. We visit Steamtown and relive Peterborough’s railway heritage. We settle in for our Overnight Stay at the Roundhouse Motor Inn.
This morning our journey takes us North to the township of Hawker where we visit the Wilpena Panorama at Jeff Morgan’s Gallery. We continue to the Flinders Ranges National Park before arriving at Wilpena Pound, an immense elevated basin about 50 square kilometres encircled by sheer cliffs. Time to explore Wilpena Pound and surrounds by walking trail or enjoy a short scenic flight (at own expense) over Wilpena Pound and surrounds. This afternoon we make our way to Blinman and through the beautiful Parachilna Gorge as we travel North through Leigh Creek to the remote township of Marree. We settle in for the next Two Nights at the Maree Hotel. Facilities maybe a little less elaborate in these remote areas.
An exciting day awaits and one that will certainly be a highlight of the tour as your “Once in a Lifetime Experience” begins, as the first group, enjoy the spectacular scenic flight over Lake Eyre in all its glory. As a result of recent heavy rains the normally dry lake is still filling with water and attracting a myriad of birds and other wildlife. See the shimmering waters as we take in the huge expanse of this isolated and rarely seen National Park, which sits 15 metres below sea level and covers 12 million hectares. We also see the famous Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks and the much talked about “Marree Man”. Time to enjoy lunch and explore the little town of Marree. This afternoon we explore the township and local area and return to the Hotel in time to freshen up for dinner.
This morning after a hearty breakfast, we make our way south and see the coal mines of Leigh Creek and pass the rugged beauty of the Flinders Ranges. We stop for morning tea en-route. Then we travel south through Quorn and on through the famous Pichi Richi Pass, the original route of the Great Southern Railway to Port Augusta where we visit the Waldata Outback Centre and experience the life of outback explorers. We continue on to Clare Valley for our Overnight Stay at the Comfort Inn Clare Central.
This morning we travel through beautiful Clare and the Barossa Valley, Australia’s most famous wine producing area, enjoy the charming old towns and spectacular views of vineyards spreading across the undulating hills. This afternoon we have a chance to sample some of the local wines before we make our way Murray Bridge for our Overnight Stay at Adelaide Road Motel
